Challenge to all Tularosa Residents-- READ!

A recent article about the seemingly poor reading habits of Americans (one- fourth have not read one book in the past year) has stirred us to make this challenge to the residents of Tularosa during the month of September. We are simply asking people to tell us how many books they have read and we will give prizes to the best readers. This contest is for ADULTS -18 and over, since kids have their own Summer Reading Program. The focus is on showing that people DO read and VALUE books. We think it's important to remember that, in spite of all the glorious technology we offer, libraries are still very much about READING BOOKS. September is also Library Card Signup Month. Sign up for your library card NOW! Keep a list of books you have read in the month of September and turn them in to the librarian!!

Here are the results:

32 (18 and over) adults participated in the challenge.

A total of 460 books were read (regular circulation not included). Several were banned books- Uncle Tom's Cabin, The Chocolate War, Harry Potter Series and Of Mice and Men to name a few.

Winners were:

1st place: Joanne Cusick, 73 books ($50.00 gift card from Hastings)
2nd: place: Monique Gonzales, 48 books ($35.00 gift card from Hastings)
3rd place: Nicole Figuieredo, 30 books ($25.00 gift card from Hastings)

Thank you to everyone that participated in our challenge! Keep up the good work!
